PAN LUBING BASICS:

Blackpowder boolits need a lot of lubrication so that the powder residue won’t gum up your barrels. In Cowboy Action Shooting you probably don’t want to have to clean your guns during a match. The lube should last all the way to the end of the rifle; pistols are more forgiving. One can buy blackpowder lube (‘SPG’ being quite popular), or you can easily make your own. Recipes abound and everyone has their favorite; a great many are based on beeswax. I prefer homemade ‘PRS’ lube. Our job is getting it into the lube groove(s) so that it can do its work. One way is to pan lube, and this is how I do it; you may come up with your own variation.

A beginning word of caution: most lube is very flammable. Also, lubing can mess up a kitchen and a relationship. Be responsible on both counts.

When pan lubing for the first time, you have to create a "lube cake." This will be used over and over. Arrange your bullets evenly on their bases, not too close together, in a non-stick baking pan. About 50 to a pan works for me.

Melt the lube in a double boiler and pour it in your pans just past the lube groove. You can’t stop here, as the lube has to be bonded to the slugs with oven heat.
