Howdy! Glad you found your way here. I'm Goatlips. I got into CAS in the ‘90s and soon discovered that reloading was going to be an important part of the game. This became even more evident when I entered the world of Black Powder shooting.
I shoot slow but I have a lot of fun (which is rule #1), and I’ll clean a match once in a while; since speed doesn’t seem to be my specialty I fell back on making smoke. Assembling blackpowder ammunition is as much a part of my SASS recreation as CAS shooting and horsing around with pards. Besides, it is a means of reaching back to the past that we so honor.
Although there is a good deal of information on ammo crafting on the Cowboy sites, I found that going into this discipline stone cold was a bit intimidating. For one who has never fooled with molten lead, or heard of a lube star, and thought that cornmeal and grits belonged on the breakfast table and Crisco in the frying pan, it may be hard to get started. Pictures were the greatest help to me on this venture, so in these articles and those that will follow, I hope to include a lot of 'em.
For Black Powder fledglings and for accomplished Soot Lords alike, I hope to pass along a few shortcuts and money savers that you're welcome to try or disregard at your pleasure. If you find something useful, please pass it on. I don't profess to have the best way to do anything, but I've tried several methods and techniques, and this is what works for me. Your comments and criticisms (constructive or otherwise) are welcome.
One more thing. Some stuff that I do is chancy and downright dangerous according to conventional wisdom. So are firearms. Be careful, and please see the disclaimer below.
